Architecture as the Cybernetic Self-Design of Boundary Conditions for Emergent Properties in Human Social Systems: il progetto di ricerca.
Manifesto
Architecture, Sustainability and Emerging Systems.
In the framework of the intense on-going research on interdisciplinary aspects of architecture and on modeling processes of acquisition of new emergent properties by complex systems in non-linear sciences, we introduce the research topic related to considering architecture as the design of boundary conditions for the induction of processes of emergence and for the acquisition of new emergent properties in social systems.
We also consider architecture as the self-design by social systems of boundary conditions for making structural previous emergent processes.
This research topic has been dealt with by signers of this Manifesto as at some references listed below. For instance, we quote:
“If we define architecture as ‘the set of human artefacts and signs that establish and denote mankind’s settlement system’ (Di Battista, 2006), we agree that architecture always represents the settlement that generates it, under all circumstances and regardless of any artistic intention. “ (Di Battista, 2008).
“….
architecture as an “emergence” of the settlement system;
place (and space) as an “accumulator” of time and a “flux” of systems;
landscape as one representation/description of the human settlement.” (Di Battista, 2008).
“Architecture may be intended as the self-design by a social system of boundary conditions suitable to keep or make emergent what are considered important aspects by the social system itself and related, for instance, to military, religious and economic power. The homogeneity between such architecture with language, music, literature, religion and science must be detected by an observer able to model the processes of emergence sustaining the system” (Minati and Collen, in review).
The scientific aspects of this Manifesto can be dealt with only by an interdisciplinary research, educational and professional activity.
Consequently we look for results on
Research. Allowing new approaches for modeling, design and evaluate architectural projects regarding not only functional and aesthetical aspects, but also their ability to induce processes of emergence in social systems;
Education. Allowing new interdisciplinary educational programs where same systemic emergent properties, such as stability, sustainability, security and energetic issues are considered in different simultaneous disciplines (interdisciplinarity) and per se as systemic interrelated properties (transdisciplinarity). Architecture is presented as the design of interdisciplinary conditions for the establishment of processes of emergence in social systems. Moreover, ethical issues for architects as designers of such conditions are introduced.
Professional activity. Allowing architects to identify their full interdisciplinary, social role as designers, not reducible to technical, functional or aesthetical aspects, but as synthesizers and inducers of social, cultural and general (not generic) aspects.
